How Is Sound Released By Turntables?

Now, many modern technologies are used in the turntable to produce the sound in a better way. In Turntables, a sound is being produced with the help of the needles. It will spin the record with the help of the belt or the direct drive system. When the record turns, the stylus has the ability to read the grooves. The needle is cone shaped and is made of diamond. The stylus is fitted at one end of the tone arm which is parallel to the record moving athwart the record while the stylus following the grooves.

As the grooves moves, the vibrations are being absorbed by the stylus, which passes through the metal that is present at the end of tone arm and to the wires at the cartridge.  The coil in the magnetic field plays a major role in converting the vibrations into the electric signals. These signals are carried by the wires to the amplifier. These signals produce sound in the speaker. It gives the best quality sound while playing on the vinyl records.

How The Sound gets Amplified?

The needle tends to move side to side on the record. The other end of the needle is fitted with the magnet, which is not in contact with the record. A small coil of wire is suspended near the magnet.

When the needle tends to vibrate, the vibration passes to the magnet and produces the current in the coil that helps to amplify the sound and produce a clear voice to the listeners. The amplifier plays an important role in converting the unclear signal into the clear voice. Thus, with the help of amplifier,  the people can get a crisp  audio signal.

Generating The Electric Current

The magnet which is present in the coil is used to generate the electric current. If the groove of the record produces high magnification, the surface of the record seems to be rough. The dump and dip make the needle rotate up and down when the records are rotating in a circular motion. As the needle rotates, current is being produced in the coil.


When the record spins on the surface of the platter, the stylus moves towards the record grooves as the cartridge is being fitted to the other end of the stylus, which is attached to the tone arm.  Since the counterweight is attached to the fixed end, the tone arm plays a major role in controlling the needle and maintaining the pressure.

Record Spin

The main reason of the vibration produced in the needle is the grooves of the record.  With the help of coils, the vibrations are being transferred to the magnet. These vibrations produce mechanical force and have the ability to move the magnetic field. It produces electricity in the coil. If the coil tends to turn more times, it produces higher voltage and thus the sound is produced.

How Sound Is Produced In The Belt Driven Turntables?

The motor gets separated from the wheels and the belt is used to connect these two parts. Thus, the platter produces only less vibration and reduces the skip and cracks which are produced by the needles. The stylus is in contact with the grooves and produces a torque which is higher at the outer edges but, it seems to be lower at the center position. When the needle rotates, current is generated and reproduces sound in the loudspeaker.

How Sound Is Produced In The Direct Driven Turntables?

The sound is produced in the same manner as the belt driven turntables. The motor is placed directly below the platter of the turntable. Nowadays, turntables are designed to have a shock absorbing material between the platter and the motor.

So, it produces little amount of vibration while using the turntable. It produces more torque than the belt driven turntables. Thus the stylus and tone arm won’t affect the action of the platter. In this type, the turntable spins fast and there will be a less chance of distortion.
